Twas’ the night before wedding season and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a- oh wait that’s not an accurate picture of what happens before wedding season. Every Wedding Photographer Essentials list looks a bit different depending on what equipment you prefer to use and your style. Before every wedding I have a checklist of everything I need to have packed and ready to go the night before. Before the beginning of every wedding season there are a few things I purchase to make sure I am ready to go for the season!

  1. Memory Cards

Every year I by new memory cards and toss the old ones. Some might say this is overkill but I would rather err on the side of caution. I have had brand new memory cards go corrupt! The cameras I currently use- Nikon D750- have dual slot memory cards. I set my camera up to back up my images while I am shooting. This is great but if both memory cards are old and decide to bite the dust… I like to stock up around black friday and then again in the spring when there are sales!

  2. Hard drives

Whether you are a professional, amateur or a student please make sure you are backing up your files! Have you every written a paper, had Word crash and then had to start all over? That sucks. It never happened to me because I always made sure to email myself a copy while I worked on top of keeping a copy on a thumb drive. This old college habit stuck with me. Every year I buy new hard drives where I keep my work for that year and then back ups.

The hard drives from the year before get retired. I had horrible experiences with seagate- and have had friends say the same thing. I recommend Western Digital as I’ve never (knock on wood) had any issues with them! Make sure to buy the hard drive that is compatible with your computer. I use a apple products so I buy hard drives that I am able to format to make MAC compatible! It looks like as of right now the WD hard drives are almost 50% off so if you need to stock up it’s a good time to do it!

  3. A new outfit

Treat yo self. That’s right I said it. You worked hard last season and probably cycled through the same 3 outfits, one of which -let’s be honest- needs to be retired. I am obsessed with dresses with pockets! During weddings I can keep my phone in one pocket and a printed timeline in the other. If i’m being honest I hate in person shopping. I hate getting naked in dressing room and awkwardly stumbling over my own feet. Save yourself a trip. Here is a cute pocket friendly outfit idea!

  4. Film

If you are shooting film at every wedding then it’s probably a good idea to buy in bulk. Find Lab has a 1-1 program (for every roll you develop you can buy a discounted roll) and they sometimes sell film in bulk at an insane discount! If you don’t shoot film, haven’t shot film or are thinking about it well the first step is to take a roll of film with you to a wedding. The very first wedding I packed a roll of film intending to shoot it and guess what? I didn’t shoot it. It sat in my bag crying out to me.

Throughout my college career I had shot so much film! This wasn’t new to me yet I was still terrified! The second wedding I shot that roll. The rest is history! I recommend starting off with 35mm film to get the hang of shooting film. Have your best friend and their significant other model for you one evening and leave your digital camera at home!

  5. Lens Wipes

I love these little suckers. I usually only go through 1 box a year and they stay stored in my closet. Before every wedding I check my lenses and make sure there are no finger smudges or dust particles that would interfere with focusing. This sounds like something silly but you wouldn’t want to find out you needed these and be stuck without them! Make sure you never use paper towels or anything rough to clean your lens. It will damage the glass! Would you use a brillo pad on your bum? I didn’t think so!

*Bonus* Fire Safe

I don’t buy one of these every year! I do have a fire safe where I store the hard drives that I only use for back up files. The one I use is very tiny and can comfortably hold a few hard drives and passports. I didn’t want anything big taking up a lot of room but next year I think i’ll need to upgrade to something a little larger! If you are looking for something small then this is for you!
